A Colorado Story

The year was 1901 when a young dentist from Massachusetts, with a recent diploma in hand, arrived in Colorado Springs to begin his career in dentistry. His name was Dr. Frederick S. McKay and he would become one of the most celebrated and honored dentists in history—receiving awards, citations and honorary degrees from professional and scientific organizations and universities from coast to coast.

I Am One in Four

I am tired—lethally fatigued. I can’t breathe. I have no memory of what it feels like to wake rested. I am acutely aware of my constant headaches, frequent stomach irregularity, chronic neck pain, and lack of energy but the worst of it, and my most prominent symptom, is my mind will not shut up. My mind refuses to give me any rest, and is always occupied with undesirable thoughts related to shame and fear. Fear is the worst. But sometimes when I am able to sleep, there is a dream of self-inflicted death that holds a very deep allure that does not frighten me. I am absolutely overwhelmed.

ADA Trustees Recognize Colorado Dentists for International Volunteer Service

In August, the American Dental Association Board of Trustees presented the Certificate for International Volunteer Service to three deserving Colorado dentists. Dr. Victor Bradford, Dr. John Ley and Dr. Robert Meyer, all from Colorado Springs, Colo., travel outside the U.S., often to remote locations, to set up portable dental clinics and teach local physicians how to establish dental clinics for ongoing care.

2015 Colorado Mission of Mercy a Success

The ninth annual Colorado Mission of Mercy (COMOM), held Aug. 14-15 at Harrison School in Canon City, Colo., was a success. This year, the school was transformed into a large-scale dental clinic in which 157 dentists provided about 1,200 patients oral healthcare services. The school’s gymnasium was set up for oral surgery, endodontic and restorative procedures, dental hygiene and pediatric dentistry. The commons area was used for imaging, and classrooms were used for the preparation of flippers and dentures.

CDA Hosts First Connect the Docs Dentist-to-Dentist Mentoring Program

What started out as an idea to create a mentoring program for dentists came to fruition Aug. 29, when the CDA held its first-ever Connect the Docs program. Dr. Lindsay Compton and Dr. Brett Kessler, who conceived the program, served as moderators. Almost 40 dentists, who attended in person or via video streaming, participated in roundtable discussions that allowed veteran dentists to share their lessons learned and new dentists to get answers to questions that will help them as they build their practices.

While you can participate in GKAS from your private office or participating clinics, the CDA also offers the opportunity for you and your clinical team to volunteer at the CU School of Dental Medicine in Aurora, Colo. We supply the patients, the instruments and third-year dental students to assist you.
