Dentists Heard at the Capitol

The CDA hosted its annual Dentists at the Capitol Lobby Day on Friday, Feb. 15. Lobby Day is an opportunity for dentists across Colorado to talk with legislators about the important issues that affect the dental community. From the push for mid-level providers to a Sunset Review of the Dental Practice Act in 2014, dentistry is currently facing a number of issues that will affect the future of the profession.

Dental Line 9 Call-in Program Helps the Public

2.3% Medical and Dental Device Tax in 2013

December 19, 2012

Starting Jan. 1, 2013, many medical and dental devices will be subject to a 2.3% excise tax, mandated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). On Dec. 5, the IRS issued final regulations for this medical device tax. The primary impact to most dental offices is expected to be price increases on purchases of certain dental equipment, materials and supplies in 2013. CPR Training Requirements for Dental Offices

The anesthesia rules of the Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners require all dentists and dental personnel who use, administer or monitor anesthesia to maintain a current life support credential, which includes CPR.

Silverthorne May Cease Fluoridation

December 19, 2012

The CDA was recently informed that Silverthorne, Colo. may be stopping community water fluoridation next year.  The town has been fluoridating since 1981 and serves a population of 3,520 in Summit County.  The decision process is still in very early stages, and the local public health department will be contacting the water department and town council.  If you have a patient who lives in Silverthorne, please consider making them aware of the benefits of fluoridated water.  As more information becomes available in 2013, including the need for public comment, the CDA will provide additional correspondence.

CU Receives Innovation Award

December 19, 2012

The University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine received the Outstanding Innovation Award by an Academic Dental Institution as a part of the 2013 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement (Gies Awards).  Only one dental school is selected per year for this honor.  The school was recognized for the development of an innovative interprofessional (IPE) curriculum that prepares graduates for future team-based practice, and provides a model for other dental institutions embracing IPE.

Are you Interested in Serving on the State Board?

The Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners will have four vacant positions available in January 2013. The state will appoint two dentists, one hygienist and one public member to fill these vacant positions on the board.  Each appointment will be for a four year term.  The commitment to serve on the state board includes participation in quarterly full board meetings, monthly panel meetings and additional committee meetings throughout the year.
