State Revisions to X-Ray Rules Continue

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) proposed changes to its radiology (x-ray) regulations in late October 2010.  The department also revised regulations in October 2009 and May 2010.  Under the newest revisions, penalties for lack of compliance have been increased.  These penalty increases in HB10-1149 were intended to address industrial radiation users, not healthcare professionals.

Dr. Andre Gillespie (Aurora), Dr. Brett Kessler (Denver) and Dr. Damien Mulvany (Englewood) made headlines in November in various media outlets.  In addition, Dr. Michael Diorio is making news of his own, providing education to students and patients about the harms of tobacco use.  Kudos to these dentists for the great work they do.

GKAS 2011 Product Recipients Announced!

CDPHE Drafts Guidance on Medical Waste

In early 2010, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) convened a stakeholder group to draft guidance related to the disposal of medical waste. The group has drafted three documents, many with potential impacts on the dental profession.

Red Flags – Passed Legislation Awaiting Signature

December 10, 2010

On Dec. 7, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation (S. 3987) exempting certain businesses, including dental practices, from the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Red Flags Rule. This follows on the heels of the U.S. Senate’s unanimous passage of the bill on Nov. 30. President Obama is expected to sign the bill by the end of the month.

CDA Hires New Executive Director Dr. Quinn Dufurrena

The CDA is pleased to announce its new executive director: Quinn Dufurrena, D.D.S., J.D.  Quinn comes to the CDA from Idaho, where he was the executive director of the Idaho Dental Association.  He has over 27 years of experience in government, private practice and non-profit sectors.

Take Action to Repeal Insurance Anti-Trust Exemptions

A bill before the U.S. Congress - H.R. 4626, the Health Insurance Fair Competition Act - would eliminate the McCarran-Ferguson antitrust exemption granted to the insurance industry nearly 65 years ago.  Earlier this year, the U.S. House passed H.R. 4626 on a 406-19 vote.  To see this bill signed into law, the Senate must act - and before Congress adjourns next month.  We need your help! Please write your senators today, asking that they quickly pass H.R. 4626, Health Insurance Fair Competition Act.

Kids back in school and the end of the year means that it's time to register for Give Kids a Smile Day (GKAS) again.  Please register to help kids in need through the ADA's 9th annual GKAS program.  GKAS is a day of free treatment and education for children without access to dental care.  Please join us by volunteering to treat children at a nearby clinic, treat children in your private office or by providing educational presentations.  As in years past, the CDA can help you with patient recruitment, educational presentations or finding a clinic to volunteer at for GKAS.
