CDA Presents Awards at the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair

The 55th Annual Colorado Science and Engineering Fair was held at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.  This three-day event showcased winning science projects from regional fairs across the state in a competition for awards, scholarships, and a chance to attend the International Science Fair with all expenses paid.  The awards are presented by more than 60 organizations and judged by more than 150 professionals from those organizations.  The Colorado Dental Association was one of those organizations.

Dentists May Be Eligible for Payment under United Healthcare Class Action Settlement

A group of patients and providers filed a class action lawsuit against United Healthcare and its affiliates alleging violations of state and federal law in providing insufficient reimbursement for covered out-of-network services.  Those involved have agreed to settle the lawsuit in exchange for $350 million in monetary compensation to patients and providers, and ongoing business practice changes by United Healthcare.

If you are a dentist who has claimed assignment of benefits as an out-of-network provider with United Healthcare in the past 15 years, you may be eligible to receive a payment under this settlement.

Medicaid Provider Payment Delay

June 10, 2010

The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing sent a notice this week regarding Medicaid claims and reimbursement:

  • Any Medicaid claims submitted by June 11 will be paid on June 18, as usual.
  • However, any Medicaid claims submitted after June 11 will NOT BE PAID UNTIL July 9.

Red Flags Rule Enforcement Delayed Again

Last week, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it will further delay enforcement of its Red Flags Rule, which would have gone into effect on June 1, 2010.  With the new extension, enforcement is postponed until Jan. 1, 2011.

Substance Abuse Intervention Bill Approved by Colorado Legislature

During the 2010 legislative session, the CDA actively supported HB 1033, a bill that would extend Medicaid reimbursement to healthcare providers who provide substance abuse interventions to their patients.  HB 1033 will save lives by encouraging more providers to help patients recognize substance abuse problems early-on and connect them with the help they need.

Dentists Meet with Federal Legislators 2010

The ADA hosts a legislative and lobbying conference in Washington, D.C. each spring that provides a mix of prominent speakers, issue briefings, grassroots education and political training. Eight CDA dentists represented Colorado at this year’s conference, held April 12-14: Dr. Jeff Hurst, Dr. Brett Kessler, Dr. Ed Leone Jr., Dr. David Lurye, Dr. Rhett Murray, Dr. Jeanne Salcetti, Dr. Jeane Schoemaker and Dr. Ken Versman.

New Medicaid ID Cards

Beginning June 1, the Colorado Department of Healthcare Policy and Financing will be issuing Medical Identification Cards with a new look to Medicaid patients. The new cards will now be bilingual (English and Spanish) and more informative. Click here to view a sample of the new card.

Charitable Care Presentation to House HHS Committee

Rep. Jim Riesberg, chair of the House Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee, asked the CDA’s help in organizing a presentation on the low cost and charitable dental options that are currently available to Coloradans.  On Thursday, April 8, the CDA – along with select dental charities – met with the House HHS Committee to provide information and resources on the topic.

Member Spotlight: Dr Walter Schneider

Schneiderwit kidsLocated in rural southern Tanzania, Songea is an impoverished, remote district about 60 miles north of the Mozambique border. In November 2009, Longmont dentist Dr. Walter Schneider spent two weeks in Songea providing free dental care in a clinic run by Miracle Corners of the World, a nonprofit organization based in New York. Working with a local dental therapist and an assistant, he provided restorations, extractions and preventive care for both children and adults. In addition, he updated the staff in diagnosis, restorative techniques and infection control procedures.

HB1234 Defeated

Bill Required U.S. Licensure for Claims Denials

Thanks to all CDA members who wrote their legislators regarding HB 1234, the bill that would require denials of insurance claims be made by U.S. licensed healthcare practitioners who have expertise in the specialty or field involved in the claim.  The CDA got involved with this bill after learning that a major insurer is planning to outsource the processing of dental claims to an office in India.  HB 1234 would have provided some basic protections to ensure that claims processors are appropriately trained and that Coloradans receive quality care.
