Medicaid Adult Dental Benefit Live April 1

April 1, 2014

Colorado’s limited adult Medicaid benefit is now available. Qualifying adults are able to visit a dental practice or clinic that is already enrolled in Medicaid and can accept Medicaid payments. The adult dental benefit allows Medicaid enrolled clients, age 21 years and over, to receive a number of basic dental services currently offered to children such as evaluations, diagnostic imaging, preventive and restorative services.

Has Your Dental License Expired?

If you have not done so, please remember to renew your state dental license.  All Colorado dentist and dental hygienist licenses expired on Feb. 28, 2014.  Dentists and dental hygienists are not permitted to practice dentistry without a current license.  The license renewal process is administered by the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).  All questions regarding this process should be directed to 303-894-2984 or 303-894-7800 or This email address is being protected from spambots. 200 Attend CU’s Lunch & Learn

On Feb. 19, nearly 200 CU dental students came out to have burritos and hear why organized dentistry matters to them from members of the CDA New Dentist Committee. As an education initiative, the CDA Membership Council organized a Lunch and Learn event at the CU School of Dental Medicine. Speakers for the program included Dr. Carol Morrow, Dr. Ben Ricketts and Dr. Nicole Eberle. The lunch was very well received and the CDA would like to extend a special thanks to the ASDA leadership and dental students Kamran Pirastehfar and Christian Piers.

Calling for CDA Delegates, Officer Nominations and More!

All dentists are invited to attend the CDA Annual Session and House of Delegates meeting.  At this meeting, current topics affecting the profession will be discussed, and delegates can voice their opinions and vote on matters brought up by CDA members.  No experience is necessary to attend and new delegates are always welcome.  The meeting takes place June 5-7 at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort.

Medicaid Proposes Coverage Policy for Adults

The state Medicaid department recently published the first major proposal on the upcoming adult dental benefit.  The current policy coverage standard can be accessed by clicking here.
 
A draft coverage policy was shared with Take 5 participants in January for feedback. It was finalized late last week. The policy includes information on coverage for diagnostic procedures, x-rays, preventive procedures, minor and major restorative procedures, endodontic procedures, periodontal treatment, removable prosthetics, oral surgery and anesthesia, as well as policies on non-covered services, prior authorizations and billing guidelines that will apply to adults covered by Medicaid. The document lists code descriptions for procedures and any frequency limitations or prior authorizations required.

Teledentistry, a Growing Trend

The use of teledentistry is growing here and across the U.S.  At the end of January, legislation passed in California (73-1) promoting teledentistry and making it reimbursable through Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program. Teledentistry has gained interest across a number of states. Teledental platforms may present treatment options to a new and underserved patient base.  These developments have led more dentists to consider teledental options for their own offices and now legislatures are following their lead.

State Board Meeting Update - Jan. 2014

The Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE) met on Jan. 23. Much of the meeting focused on discussion of the Sunset Review of the Dental Practice Law. A new dentist and a new public member are expected to be appointed to the SBDE shortly. The SBDE plans to conduct rulemaking on opioid prescribing and licensure rules in April. We will share the draft rules with CDA member dentists when they are published for comment ahead of this meeting. The SBDE also plans to appoint a committee to assist in review of anesthesia applications at its April 2014 meeting.

Dental Sunset Review Bill Introduced

February 19, 2014

On Jan. 30, HB 1227 – the 2014 Sunset Review of the Dental Practice Act – was introduced before the state House of Representatives. 2014 marks a year where the laws that govern dentistry are reviewed and potentially revised. Many of CDA’s priority recommendations, including continuing education and anesthesia updates, were included in the introduced bill draft. The bill still has a long legislative process ahead, but is off to a good start for the dental profession. The CDA will continue to provide updates throughout this process.
