Notable changes to the reinstatement rule include:

  • Removal of a verification requirement for out-of-state licenses when applying for reinstatement.
  • Extension of the grace period from 6 months to 2 years after the license lapses, where a dentist is not required to retake the jurisprudence exam.
  • Increased specificity on the timeline for demonstrating clinical competency. Under the proposed rule, a dentist would have to demonstrate clinical competency if he/she has not practiced at least 700 hours in a 12-month period during the last five years. Previously the statute required a dentist to have worked at least one year out of the last five years.
  • Discussion of three clinical competency scenarios that will be considered on case-by-case basis by the board, which include educational programs, faculty/research roles and military service.
